On Learning to Play Less

September 2, 2008 at 12:13 pm (Silverthorn)

At rehearsal last night, we were working on a new song we’ve written (as yet untitled) when Mike made the shocking suggestion that we should PLAY LESS! I mean what the heck is that all about? Anyone who recalls the young Mike will know what I mean. I was particularly outraged when he suggested that I didn’t play bass for part of the song. I mean, you can’t have no bass, can you? But do you know what? It worked.  So I went one further and suggested that we ALL stop playing for a part of the song (and just have the vocal line) – they weren’t sure, but we did it, and it worked! And now it sounds proper 80’s rock!

A valuable learning experience – less really is more.  Perhaps I should have listened to my father.

… and didn’t I always tell you “father knows best”! We’ve been listening to the Logical Bonds album “The Conflict” again recently – it rocks, but there is an awful lot of Mike on keyboards and drum machine. Can Adam play a reverse cymbal yet??? or three bass drums? Pete

Hey Dad/Pete – Consider yourself heard! And, Adam’s very talented, but not that talented!
